Once upon a time in a big jungle, there lived a mighty lion. He was the king of the forest, but he was also very mean. Every day, he would hunt and eat many animals. The animals were scared and didn’t know what to do.

One day, they all had a meeting. “If this continues,” said the deer, “soon none of us will be left!” So they went to the lion with a plan.

“Oh mighty lion,” said the wise old turtle, “instead of hunting daily, we will send you one animal every day as your meal.”

The lion agreed. “That sounds easy! I accept!” he roared.

From then on, one animal was sent to the lion each day. One day, it was a clever little rabbit’s turn. The rabbit didn’t want to be eaten. So he thought of a plan.

He reached the lion’s den very late.

“Why are you so late?” growled the hungry lion.

“Oh mighty king,” said the rabbit, “I was coming with five other rabbits, but another lion stopped us and said he is the real king of the jungle. He even challenged you!”

The lion became very angry. “Take me to this other lion right now!” he demanded.

The clever rabbit took the lion to a deep well. He pointed at the water. “There he is, down there!”

The lion looked into the well and saw his own reflection in the water. He thought it was the other lion! With a loud roar, he jumped in to fight.

But there was no lion—only water. The lion could not come out and never bothered the animals again.

The jungle was safe once more, all thanks to the clever little rabbit!
